Beament served in the navy in the First World War before establishing himself in Montreal as a commercial artist, teacher, and commander of a peacetime RCNVR division. He enlisted again in 1939 and, from 1943 to 1947, served as an official war artist. From 1964 to 1967 he was the president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
