Shared Experience: Sali Herman (1898–1993)
Art and War
Herman was born in Zurich, studying there and in Paris between 1914 and 1923. He arrived in Australia in 1937, settling in Sydney. Enlisting in the second AIF in 1941, he served in a camouflage unit and was an official war artist from 1945 until 1946. He employed strong colourful forms in evoking compassion for his subjects.
