Description

Group portrait of graduating officers at the Naval College, Portsmouth. Identified middle row, far left, Sub Lieutenant (Sub Lt) Ian Thomas Roy Treloar of Surrey Hills, Vic. Sub Lt Treloar joined the RAN as a cadet midshipman on 1 January 1933. In 1937 he was loaned to the Royal Navy and, after service on HMS Hood and HMS Excellent, he returned to the RAN. Following his service on HMAS Australia, he was posted to HMAS Sydney where he was promoted to Lieutenant. On 20 November 1941, Lt Treloar was killed in action when HMAS Sydney was sunk with the loss of all hands after a battle with the German raider Kormoran.
