Bowen found inspiration for her work in the south of France. She took great pleasure in the climate that enabled her to spend more time painting:
I thought of the rain and the mud and the darkness of Sussex and decided that climate is one of the few things in life that really matter. Other things, friends, fame, or fortune, may elude or disappoint you, but a good climate never lets you down. And really life is too short to be struggling perpetually with the weather when one is already struggling with so many other things!
