It was not until Bowen went to Italy that she found the inspiration that would lead to her own style. She adopted the narrow tone scale of frescoes and the formal patterns she saw in the early Italian painters: “the building-up of patterns . . . seen in a kind of no-man’s-land of diffused light, was the thing which was going to interest me most in painting”.
