Prayer mat : Iraqi minelayer 'Jumariya'
Description
Muslim prayer mat made from brown hessian and white woven plastic sacking. The hessian surface of the mat is placed face downwards on the floor, while the upper, white plastic sacking portion, is knelt upon in prayer. This upper surface is decorated in black, red, yellow and green wool long stitch worked into various designs including a flower, a mosque, geometric shapes and Arabic words.
History / Summary
Prayer mat taken from the Iraqi minelaying tug 'Jumariya' (also known as 'Jamahoria'). This tug was intercepted by a boarding party from HMAS Kanimbla, and was found to be towing a barge loaded with 20 Manta and 48 LUGM sea mines.
