Description

Outdoor portrait of Colonel Chaplain James Green, senior Methodist Chaplain and William Owens. Born 1865, and trained at Rutherford College, Newcastle-on-Tyne in ministerial training, Green served as Colonel Chaplain in the Boer War with 1st Australian Bushmen and 1st Commonwealth Horse, receiving the Kings and Queens medals. He also served as Captain in the Citizens' Military Forces 33rd Battalion prior to enlistment on 8 September 1914. He embarked from Australia on HMAT Orvieto on 21 October 1914 and was assigned to hospital duties in Egypt. In January 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished order of St Michael and St George in recognition of valuable services in connection with the war. He returned to Australia in January 1918 on duty.
