Description

"The two comrades". Studio portrait of an indigenous soldier, 7685 Private (Pte) Norman Baird (left), and 7846 Pte Benjamin Dallow, both of the 9th Battalion. Pte Baird, a miner from Cooktown, Queensland prior to enlistment and Pte Dallow a well sinker from Woodend, Queensland prior to enlistment, embarked with the 26th Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Euripides on 31 October 1917. Pte Baird later transferred to the 15th Battalion with the service number 7685A and then to the Australian Veterinary Hospital before returning to Australia on 19 April 1919. Pte Dallow who had previously been rejected for service on medical grounds, served in England before returning to Australia on 11 December 1918.
