AWAS shoulder title
This resource is part of Memorial Box 3: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wartime Service

This object relates to the service of Oodgeroo Noonuccal.
The Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) was formed in August 1941 to enable women to fulfil roles traditionally performed by men. Members of the AWAS took on a variety of roles including drivers, cooks, typists and signallers.
At least nine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women served with the AWAS, while another three joined the Australian Women’s Land Army. What do you think may have motivated them to enlist?
