Tunic

This object relates to the service of William Rawlings, Douglas Grant, Harry Murray, Richard Kirby and Daniel Hodgekiss.

During the First World War, Australian soldiers wore a loose-fitting tunic made from wool. There were four pockets on the outside and another on the inside that held a field dressing. A Rising Sun badge was positioned on each collar, with a colour patch on the sleeves to identify the wearer’s unit.

Even after the First World War ended, some soldiers, like Private William Chatfield (second from left), wore their uniforms to their weddings. Why do you think they may have done this?
