Howse family pay tribute to first Australian awarded the Victoria Cross
Accompanied by her own children and grandchildren, Canberra identity Mrs Valerie Howse OAM came to the Australian War Memorial recently to tour the newly opened Hall of Valour and to pay tribute to her late father-in-law, Major General Neville Reginald Howse VC KCB KCMG, honoured as the first Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross in 1900 during the Boer War.

The Dinkum Oil
While serving overseas Australian servicemen and women have often produced publications for their own entertainment and the Memorial collects these in the Troopship and Unit Serials collection. The collection is diverse including publications from the Boer War up to the Peacekeeping in 1980s.

Trooper Francis Arthur Groom DCM
The Memorial has recently received a donation that provides us with an important link to Tasmanian involvement in the Boer War. Included in this donation is the Distinguished Conduct Medal that Trooper Francis Arthur Groom received for this battle, one of only five received by Tasmanian forces in the war.

Research uncovers first known Indigenous soldier to die on active service
Private Walter Joseph Parker is the most recent addition to the Australian War Memorial's Indigenous Boer War list and, as current research stands, is the earliest known and identified Aboriginal soldier to make the ultimate sacrifice while in service.

In the first of two adapted extracts from the book, Wilcox describes a typical day experienced by Australian soldiers in South Africa; in the second extract, he reminds us of a war crime by an Australian that went unpunished.

Before and after: stories from the paper lab
The Australian War Memorial has a huge collection of items on paper encompassing Australia's wartime experience from the Boer War to the present day. The conservation of these important pieces of history is the job of our paper lab team. The paper lab recently received a new acquisition, a drawing by an unknown artist titled "Soldier from the Army Medical Corps" (ART94358)
