Description

Portrait of 368 Squadron Leader Ian Lindsay Campbell at an unknown base in the Middle East. Campbell enlisted in the RAAF in 1933 qualifying as a Wireless Telegraphy Operator (WTO), AC2. Shortly after, he qualified as an Air Gunner (AG) and was promoted to sergeant (Sgt). As a sgt, he attended the Point Cook RAAF Flying School and qualified as a pilot with a Commission (Pilot Officer). In 1938 he was attached for a short time to the Royal Air Force (RAF) and during the Second World War he was posted to the 201st Coastal Command Group, Middle East. He was a flight commander with No 459 Squadron (Sqn), RAAF, flying Hudson bombers, and, from October 1942 to November 1943, he was the commanding officer of No 454 Sqn, RAAF, flying Baltimore bombers. He also commanded No 14 Sqn RAF and No 15 Sqn RAAF. After the war, he commanded RAAF stations at Canberra and Richmond. He retired in 1964 with the rank of Group Captain.
