Description

Studio portrait of 400871 Aircraftman (AC) Austin James Collins. A clerk of courts of Sandringham, Victoria, prior to enlisting in the RAAF in November 1940, he undertook training in Australia. Aircraftman Collins was promoted to Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) while posted to an RAF squadron in Singapore and returned to Australia after the fall of Malaya. Flt Sgt Collins was then posted to the 22nd Squadron RAAF in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. On 1 June 1943, Flt Sgt Collins and three other RAAF servicemen were killed when the Boston A28 aircraft they were flying crashed in Papua New Guinea.
