Julia
painted in Paris, c. 1928
oil on canvas 73 x 54.1 cm
signed l.r., “STELLA BOWEN”, not dated
private collection
On 18 April 1928 Julia was baptised into the Roman Catholic church in Paris. Gertrude Stein and James Joyce were her godparents. Bowen did not attend the ceremony but Ford wrote to her full of pride about their daughter reciting the prayers in Latin, French and, with prompting, English.
It is possible that this portrait, which is formal and traditional in its approach, may have been painted after the baptismal ceremony.
