Stella Bowen spent two holidays in the Haute Savoie region of France and to her surprise she enjoyed the grandeur of the mountains. The subject of the glacier, of which she made two paintings, is quite unlike her usual preference for contemplating “local life”:
On these heights and in this heavenly air, I’ve really loved the complete absence of any human interest . . . I’ve done a painting of the local glacier which is like a great crocodile wriggling down thro’ the most amazing geography! I wanted also to do a “close-up” of his face, which had a gaping mouth from which gushed an icy torrent. But his whole mask fell crashing down in the sun, killing a man, ruining my subject.
